France

In lockdown

Despite France’s reputation for being uncompliant, rebellious and willing to protest in defence of civil liberties, their lockdown has been one of the strictest in Europe. Policing has increased dramatically; many are prohibited from activity outdoors between 10-7pm every day with large fines put in place to keep people compliant. The French by response, are staying put. Instead of protests, there is applause for hospital staff and heath care workers, and an increase in community spirit and life. Apertif video-conferences and calls are popular, as the French consider it important to share a drink with one another, and live cooking shows are providing some much-needed relief to those overwhelmed by the crisis.
